Scientific Rationale
The transformative impact of JWST observations has turned Galaxy Evolution into one of the fastest-moving areas of astrophysics, raising unexpected and still unresolved questions. Addressing these pressing challenges requires a coordinated effort from the entire community, combining open discussions with strategic planning. Following the success of the first edition, the 2027 “season 2” workshop will focus on the following outstanding issues at the center of intense scientific debate:
- How can we reach the final redshift frontier? Developing common strategies to fully exploit JWST capabilities and push observations towards the earliest epochs accessible with current facilities.
- How can we discover the hidden stars in the first Gyr? Coordinating observational and theoretical efforts to overcome the challenges posed by dust in the high-redshift Universe.
- When and how did galaxies stop forming stars? Designing research strategies to constrain the abundance of quenched galaxies across cosmic time and understand their evolutionary paths.
The meeting will feature invited presentations with ample time dedicated to discussion, brainstorming, and the identification of key open questions deserving deeper investigation. The CSI:Sesto workshops aim to foster new collaborations and serve as incubators for innovative ideas, impactful observing programs and cutting-edge theoretical studies.
