Scientific Rationale

Prominent surface brightness discontinuities have been revealed in stunning Chandra and XMM images of many merging and relaxed clusters and groups. They have been interpreted as "cold fronts", contact edges between regions of gas with different entropies. They are the boundary of a dense subcluster core moving through a hotter host medium in merging objects or they are induced by a minor merger which causes oscillation of the gas of the core in relaxed objects.

Cold fronts are unique tools to understand the micro-physical properties of the ICM (transport processes, magnetic fields); they can be used as a gauge of the merger activity, such as determing the gas bulk velocity; they are key evidence of large scale disturbances in the X-ray emitting medium, whose turbulence can re-accelerate relativistic electron seeds to produce the observed large scale radio emission.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together X-ray, radio, optical observers and theoreticians/numerical simulators in the interest of deepening connections and pave the way for future numerical and observational efforts to exploit the unique constraints provided by cold fronts.
