Scientific Rationale

“From the Dolomites to the event horizon: sledging down the black hole potential well” will reach its VIII edition in July 2027, continuing a series that began in 2011. The workshop is dedicated to the study of accretion processes and strong-gravity phenomena around black holes, spanning the full mass scale from stellar-mass systems to Active Galactic Nuclei.

Over the years, this workshop has developed a clear scientific identity: a focused, discussion-oriented meeting designed to maximise interaction and foster concrete scientific progress. It brings together researchers working both theoretically and observationally in high-energy astrophysics, with particular emphasis on accretion flows, disk–corona systems, relativistic reflection, winds and jets, spectral and timing variability, X-ray polarimetry and high-resolution spectroscopy, alongside the interpretation of data from current and forthcoming facilities.

The primary goals of the workshop are to:

-Assess the state of the art through invited review talks delivered by leading experts, providing a coherent overview of recent developments in black hole astrophysics.
-Present and critically discuss new results via shorter, focused contributions on ongoing projects and recent discoveries.
-Encourage in-depth scientific exchange, enabled by the compact size of the meeting and ample time for informal discussion.
-Promote concrete scientific advancement, with afternoons dedicated to collaborative work, thematic discussions, and the consolidation of emerging ideas.
-Stimulate new collaborations, particularly across different black hole mass regimes and between theoretical modelling and observational analysis.

The format will follow the structure successfully adopted in previous editions: morning sessions devoted to review and contributed talks, and afternoons reserved for open discussions and collaborative activities. With approximately 50 participants, the workshop intentionally maintains a scale that ensures both breadth of expertise and a highly interactive environment.
