    Scientific Rationale

This invitation-only workshop will continue the effort started in 2022 to review the state-of-the-art of observations and simulations about the most dense, massive and compact galaxies across the Universe: from the high-z dense, star-forming galaxies to the local ultra-compact massive galaxies, an entire feast of cosmic nuggets.

These objects pose a great challenge for the current paradigm on galaxy formation and evolution, and can be of precious help in understanding the first stage of the mass assembly of giant local early-type galaxies, which account for more than half of the total stellar mass of the whole Universe and are responsible for its chemical enrichment.

The first workshop that we organised in 2022 aimed at bringing together experts in the field to start new collaborations and work together with the goal of assembling a large sample of these galaxies, especially at redshift z<2 when galaxies are supposed to gradually start to grow in size. The time is ripe for a second workshop, especially in light of the newest and upcoming facilities (such as Euclid, DESI, or LSST), which will deliver new observations finally allowing us to trace the time evolution of these peculiar and rare objects. Furthermore, improvement in hydrodynamical simulations will allow us to compare the observations with predictions from simulation in order to better understand their formation mechanisms and finally shedding light on the role of the most compact and densest objects in galaxy evolution.

If you believe that your science is closely related to the topics of this workshop and you would therefore like to be considered for an invitation, please contact us at this address: cosmic.nuggets.feast@gmail.com sharing you contact details and a short abstract of your work and what you wish to contribute with at the meeting.
