Scientific Rationale

The discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) marked the beginning of a new era for astrophysics, withdetections steadily increasing (90 after O3, with many more expected from O4). The spectacular multi-messenger event GW170817 highlighted the potential of joint GW and electromagnetic (EM) observations and led to major breakthroughs in astrophysics, nuclear physics, and fundamental physics. Yet, many uncertainties remain in both detection methods and astrophysical models. As we move toward next-generation detectors like the Einstein Telescope (ET), but also the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna or the Lunar Gravitational Wave Antenna, optimizing the detection and interpretation of multi-messenger events— particularly kilonovae(KNe) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) — is now crucial. The Vera Rubin Observatory, set to begin operations in July 2025, will provide an unprecedented opportunity to build large statistical samples of EM counterparts to binary neutron star mergers and core-collapse supernovae. Its synergy with ET will refine our understanding of neutron star equations of state, merger environments, and astrophysical event rates.

This conference brings together experts in GW physics, EM observations, theoretical modeling, and multi-messenger astronomy to foster collaboration, constrain key astrophysical processes, and maximize the scientific impact of ET and Rubin in the emerging multi-messenger era.
