Scientific Rationale

The discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) has opened a new era in astrophysics, with an increasing number of detections and rapidly improving constraints on compact binary populations. The joint GW-electromagnetic (EM) event GW170817 demonstrated the transformative potential of multi-messenger observations, yet many key questions remain unresolved, particularly in the interpretation of source populations and their EM counterparts.

In the coming years, the field will face both new opportunities and challenges. On the GW side, improved statistics from the LVK collaboration will refine merger rates and population properties, including binary neutron star (BNS) delay-time distributions. At the same time, different communities, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) observers and population synthesis experts, often adopt distinct approaches to modeling these populations, highlighting the need for a more unified framework. On the EM side, the evolution of follow-up strategies – especially in the absence of precise GW localizations – and the role of observations without GW triggers (e.g. short GRBs) will be crucial, particularly during the expected gap between observing runs.

This workshop aims to bring together experts in GW population inference, GRB and transient studies, and theoretical modeling to address these challenges. Particular emphasis will be placed on connecting insights from gravitational-wave observations, GRB populations, and stellar evolution models, as well as exploring new observational opportunities offered by facilities such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and missions like Einstein Probe.

Building on the success of the first ABETE meeting held in Sesto in March 2026, and in view of the upcoming LVK observing run, ABETE-2 will provide a timely platform to consolidate current knowledge, identify key open questions, and define strategies for the next generation of multi-messenger observations, opening the way toward future facilities such as the Einstein Telescope.

Registration deadline: 30 November 2026

The workshop is planned for a maximum of 30 people. If this number is exceeded, there will be a waiting list and you will be contacted by the organizers
