Scientific Rationale

A new generation of optical/IR photometric and spectroscopic surveys of galaxy clusters is currently under way (CLASH, DAFT/FADA, ICBS, IDCS, MadCoWS, RCS-2, SHELS, SpARCS, etc…). These new surveys are extending and deepening our knowledge of clusters in many ways:

– by routinely finding clusters at redshifts z>1,

– by making large samples of spectroscopic members available for many clusters,

– by widening the spectral coverage of cluster galaxy populations,

– by lowering the stellar mass limit of cluster galaxy samples.

This new knowledge is now being digested and compared to theoretical predictions that range from the evolution of galaxies in dense environments to cosmological models. The aim of this meeting is to discuss recent results obtained from these surveys on these topics, with an eye to the future, when large optical/IR cluster catalogs will be obtained from surveys like DES, Euclid, LSST, and Pan-Starrs.

This meeting is dedicated to the memory of our friend and colleague Alain Mazure (1947-2013).

The workshop will be hosted at the Sport & Kurhotel in Bad Moos. We advise you to make your reservation at this hotel, where discounted (20%) rates are available for participants (please add a comment specifying that you will attend the workshop):
