Scientific Rationale
The discovery of Changing-State Active Galactic Nuclei (CS-AGN) undergoing dramatic multi-wavelength variability on timescales of months to years has posed a major challenge to the classical steady-state accretion disc model of Shakura & Sunyaev (1973). Because these rapid state transitions occur orders of magnitude faster than the viscous timescales of thin discs, recent efforts have shifted away from variable obscuration toward intrinsic accretion flow instabilities, such as magnetic reconnection, disc tearing, and thermal-viscous transitions. The workshop aims to bring together a group of researchers working, both theoretically and observationally, in the field of CS AGN with the goals of:
- Deciphering the key parameters, including Eddington ratio, black hole spin, magnetic field topology, and flow geometry, that govern abrupt accretion state shifts.
- Mapping the dynamical response of circumnuclear material (from the X-ray corona to the broad-line region) to primary continuum variations.
- Establishing a scale-invariant physical framework by linking CS-AGN phenomenology to the state transitions routinely observed in stellar-mass X-ray binaries.
By defining essential multi-wavelength diagnostics, sample selection criteria, and priorities for next-generation observing facilities, our workshop is aimed at outlining a strategic roadmap to transform CS-AGN from isolated observational anomalies into a cornerstone for understanding black hole accretion physics in real time.
