    Extensive high precision surveys of stellar populations in our Galaxy are a major investment of the astronomical community over the coming decade. Ground based photometric and spectroscopic surveys are now targeting different stellar components of the Milky Way, while astrometric and asteroseismic space borne missions are on the verge of delivering long sought stellar properties for field and cluster stars. All of this on an industrial scale, ranging from several tens of thousands to a billion of stars. Arguably, the combination of chemical, kinematic and age information offers one of the most powerful constraints on theoretical models of the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. While studies in this direction have already started, the potential systematic uncertainties plaguing such investigations have not been explored in full.

    We have recently started a collaborative effort to generate synthetic Galactic stellar populations, with realistic observational uncertainties and biases. The aim of this workshop is to bring together the scientists involved in this collaboration, to assess how well stellar properties can be recovered using different approaches, which are the major limitations in such a quest, and what are the prospects of using stars to decipher the history of the Milky Way. For this workshop we envisage a series of practical sessions, where participants will tests different methodologies of retrieving stellar and Galactic parameters from mock samples, compare results and discuss ideas.
